CHARACTER HISTORY: Svetlana is the fourth child born to Ivanna and Grigory Volkova, and it is a miracle she was born at all. Ivanna and Grigory were in love from the moment they met, despite their marriage being arranged. Ivanna was only fourteen years old and Grigory was twenty-two and already showing promise in the Russian mafia. He was a wizard and the knowledge was kept under wraps very tightly by his muggle family. Not even his closest mentors in the gang knew that he used magic from time to time to help complete his crimes. He was mostly a thief, but he was learning the intricacies of assassination when he met his wife. She learned soon after their wedding that he was a wizard, and she loved him even more for it. He knew he was a very lucky man to have found such a rare woman.
Ivanna was expecting a child within the first year of their marriage. Aleksei was born healthy and strong and they believed it to be a good omen for their future children. But fortune had little to do with bearing children for their stressful lifestyle. When their second son Ilya was born three years later, he never even took a breath. The midwife tried to wake him, but he was born too early and very small. Two years after that, another son was born and lived for mere hours. That was Gavril, and he had fair hair like his mother. Ivanna was devastated and felt as if she were failing her husband. She was only twenty and already had two sons gone. She was terrified of losing another child, so she tried everything she could to not get pregnant again. There was at least one other pregnancy that she lost, but she was barely far enough along to tell that she was with child. It was also very difficult, but not as hard as losing sons that had come full term. When she was twenty-six, she became pregnant again. She didn't even tell Grigory because she couldn't bear to break his heart again. Svetlana was born in cold December and she was small, but strong. They had not been so happy since Aleksei was born.
Svetlana loved both of her parents, but she rarely saw her father because he always seemed to be gone on business. By the time she was five years old, things had become strained with Grigory and the head of the Russian mafia. He wasn't sure if it was because they had found out about the magic or they didn't think he was doing his job well enough, but he took his wife and children to England and opened a shop to hide out in. However, it wasn't long before they were found and the mafia took out Grigory and Ivanna, leaving sixteen year old Alek to care for his young sister. Even though she was only five, she still has nightmares about their death from time to time. Sometimes she wishes she had been just a few years younger so she might not have remembered them at all.
Still, Svetlana grew up with hope for the future and a love for her brother that was rivaled by none. She has not focused on her romantic future, though she is not as innocent as she looks. She has a flare for dark magic, and sometimes flirts with the criminals they house at the inn. She doesn't intentionally anger Alek, but she doesn't back down from it either.
