OVERALL PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Matthias was born with blue eyes like every baby and white blonde hair. The eyes kept their blue colour as he grew up, but his hair continued to darken but can still be considered blonde. He could be described as rather vain at times and has to make sure his hair is in shape. He has high, sophisticated cheekbones but a rather square chiseled jaw. His job demands a certain degree of fitness of him, which he has, but he would not be considered overly muscular but is of average statue however with slightly wide shoulders, which appear wider as he’s not very tall.
NON-MAGICAL SKILLS: Having been taught well in a Muggle household he has good table manners when he chooses to apply them. He can play the piano and even knows where to place his fingers on a violin, but he hasn’t continued either after his mother’s departure so it would probably take some time for him to re-activate his buried skills. He can dance and is good at math and numbers. A worker at the harbour used to show him how to make figures out of wood and draw sketches with charcoal. He’s also fair at jousting, having competed with boys both from school and from home in secret matches now and then. However he never put much effort in it and often found himself at the sidelines instead, analyzing and coaching his friends.
MAGICAL SKILLS: Matthias is a creative but structured mind, which he applies now and then in the rather dangerous occupation of inventing and trying out new spells. His magical talents lie rather in the logic area of the taught subjects. Where he’s too slow with his wand arm he makes it up with strategic thinking, being to a degree able to recognize wand movements and match them to the spells quickly. Most of all with protective charms he figured out an algorithm how to approach them to try and break them but so far can only oppose simple ones put on less valuable objects for example.
WEAKNESSES: Matthias can on occasion be startled by things not following logic. It brings him off balance and he has a hard time accepting. But fate would have it that she didn’t have to like it. Only a year later, with Matthias 6 years old, Heinrich died in a tavern brawl, leaving his wife with his money, possessions and three children.
Ruth proved to be a very efficient housewife and she managed the family well, preserving much of the money she had been left and earning more by tutoring in their house. Her sons too received more rigorous education with their ‘lenient’ father out of the way. Learning languages and logic, even painting and the piano, there was no escaping from mother’s lessons.
Rather quickly after her husband’s death Ruth began seeing a steel tycoon who had come to the city to supervise the rise of a brand new factory. This man, as if Ruth had known it would happen, was then the family’s ticket to Britain when a Pox epidemic took hold of Germany. On the island they continued to live in wealth, once Ruth had married the man, even greater that they had had before.
All three children were sent to renowned schools to further their education best, but Matthias continued to return home with letters about strange and unacceptable, but mostly unexplainable behaviour. His mother would yet lose her head about her son’s delinquency at school, something he didn’t show at home. It seemed his magic only appeared when he was out of his mother’s grasp. The same began to happen as well with the second son and when a wizard visited their home to explain about Hogwarts, Ruth was beyond reasoning. Keeping her face as well as she could in front of the visitor she raged later in the evening before she attempted to take her life, failing. She then was brought to an asylum to recover from her madness, the three boys left in the care of a man who had failed to connect to them.
Soon Matthias went off to Hogwarts. The first weeks had him thinking of only his brothers alone with their new father but Hogwarts’ magic quickly captured him and he soaked up everything he was taught. At first he was rather unsure of himself as the lacking control of his mother continued to be absent and his behaviour, which had first improved, started to worsen. He wanted to know where Hogwarts’ limits lay so he was found to sneak out at night, tease girls and fail to do his homework. However despite all this he continued to keep up with his school work, finding himself in the upper part of the class spectrum.
This first year had passed in a rush for Matthias and the hard reality of returning to his brothers who he had neglected and the father figure who he had all but forgotten about, only caught up with him at the station in London. Therefore he looked forward to the next year at Hogwarts all the more. Only with Lukas, his younger brother, could he connect again a little as the younger boy’s signs of magic couldn’t be overlooked anymore.
Despite what had happened in his past and his strict upbringing with severe punishment, Matthias did not fall into melancholy or turn out a frightened boy. Instead he reveled in the new gained freedom and his demeanour opened, making it easy for him to gain friends with his friendly but daring attitude and despite his bullying habit which made an appearance now and then, a relic from his mother’s views.
At school Matthias chose Arithmancy in his third year, more by accident rather than knowing what it was, and he was rather good at it for he could apply his logical thinking. In the other subjects it depended on the topic, but if he put his mind to it, simple studying was no novelty to him and he could do it well.
It had never been a question if Matthias would continue Hogwarts after taking his OWLs even though his stepfather, having found out about the boy’s affinity with numbers, advised him to get a ‘proper’ education and join his company. Matthias never did. Instead he forgot about it as soon as his anger about his stepfather vanished.
However something of his stepfather’s advice stuck for after having achieved a fair few NEWTs, excelling in Arithmancy, he applied for a job at Gringotts bank, starting with a desk job of banking and transactions before he would start the Curse Breaker training. However, finding the job to his liking, he completed his training and returned to the desk job, only on occasion doing field trips abroad to satisfy his urge for adventure and danger.
After one of these trips he returned to Britain and decided to visit his brothers, making sure they were still well treated by their stepfather. He found them well enough but himself at odds with the man and his unwillingness to accept the magic of the three boys. It was after a fight with the man that Matthias stormed out of the study and almost ran against the maid his stepfather had employed. After some brooding, plotting and watching the rather enticing maid he took her aside and tested the level of her loyalty. Being satisfied with what he found out he conspired with her to spite his stepfather and have various objects randomly disappear from the house. The plotting knitted a bond between the two which continued to strengthen even long after Matthias had left his stepfather’s home again and advised the maid to leave as well so as to not become a suspect.
