Raven Payne
NAME: Raven Payne
AGE: 42
SOCIAL CLASS: n/a
STATUS: Widowed
OCCUPATION: Thief, Mercenary and Assasin
PLAY-BY: Tarja Turunen
BLOOD STATUS: Half blood
EYES: Green-silver
HAIR: Black-brown and very long
SKINTONE: Pale
HEIGHT & WEIGHT: 5'11'' 137lbs
DISTINGUISHING MARKS: She's missing her right leg from just below the knee.
OVERALL PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION:
She's a very sharp-looking woman, thin, skeletal almost, tall and harsh. She very rarely smiles and is always exuding an aura of menace. She dresses plainly, usually in dark colours. When she smiles it is not a comfort to the beholder, more a warning, like brightly coloured fish.
NON-MAGICAL SKILLS:
Shes strong and agile, extremely graceful. She can speak English and Chinese.
MAGICAL SKILLS: Shes very powerful, highly skilled in the dark arts and unforgivables over other things. She can cast excellent disillusionment charms through years of practice and flawless silencing charms. She's also very good at transfiguration, being an animagus with the form of a common raven. (I'll fill out an app for this separately.)
WEAKNESSES: Raven cannot read or write, and while she's a very powerful witch, she has extreme difficulty remembering new spells, but once she masters them, they are flawless. She cannot deal with her own ignorance, if she overlooks something obvious or well known she will shut down for days at a time.
STRENGTHS: She is a very logical thinker, can solve practical problems and is an expert at keeping herself out of trouble. She can pick locks and use a dagger with competence. Despite her strength she fares poorly at hand-to-hand combat, which is why she'll sneak up on you to kill you.
QUIRKS & HABITS: She doesn't talk a lot, and usually over analyses things, she tends to constantly check her belongings haven't gone missing from her person and she constantly washes her hands.
OVERALL PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION: Shes a careful, dangerous, smart woman. She has to be to stay alive. She cares for very little beyond her own survival and her material things. She can be hot headed but would never rush into a situation without having a plan, a contingency plan and a back up for the contingency.
BIRTH PLACE: China
PARENTS: Robert and Vivian Payne
SIBLINGS: none
SIGNIFICANT OTHER: Gus Hadley
CHILDREN: Balfour Hadley
OTHERS: Lars, her pet.
CHARACTER HISTORY:
Robert Payne was an Englishman sent to run one of five permanent English ports in china, a mugglebor wizard who was a very high ranking military officer until his connection with magic was discovered and he was all but exiled. His wife, Vivian Hadley, a half blood who's father deliberatly arranged her marriage to the muggleborn moved with him and they had and raised their only daughter, Raven, in China. Her parents taught her the port-town was their family's legacy, and she'd marry and have children and their legacy would last forever. She was the only child of her parents, and despite being a girl she was loved and treasured beyond any other child she knew, until she was 15 years old and she fell in love with a Chinese girl named Nuan-Ru Zheng.
Not understanding it had to be a man she married when she told her parents she'd like to marry not only a Chinese person but a woman, her father went into a rage. He ordered Nuan killed publicly immediately and beat and disowned his daughter.
Nuan-Ru's betrothed, a half English half Chinese wizard going only by the name Balfour took pity on the girl and took her in. Raven lived on the sea, dropping her surname as Balfour had done, for four years. In this time he taught her what magic he knew, as well as raised her to be smarter, have better survival instincts, he taught her how to fight and taught her how to change herself into an animal and she found her animagus form was her namesake, and figured it was becasue death followed her.
Eventually she left Balfour, and set port in England to try to start again.
Turns out English society were not welcoming of a nineteen-year old pirate-witch with a poor grasp of English and no family to speak of. Refusing to become a cheap whore, Raven managed to scrape a job as a barmaid, and eventually got her English up to a good enough standard that she could pose as a respectable, low-class English woman, though her accent was still a bit off.
In her time at the pub was when she realised her talents for thieving and assasination, it came about that the customers knew to slip her a few coin and whisper a name, she could figure out who they were and how to kill them from there. The Pub's business boomed, Mr Hadely couldn't be happier. Her position as waitress became completely for show, people began to call her The Raven Woman, the one to see if you needed something underhand to happen, the one who was followed about by death.
A year and a half later, the owner of the pub died, and his son, the self-made, well connected Gus Hadely inherited, it was love at first sight, despite her background and what she did. She married Gus who had worked his way into the lower middle class, with tactics as underhanded as her own. They had a son, who she named Balfour and she stopped being a hired mercenary and settled down.
Unfortunatley her work made her enemies and late on the night of their son's third birthday the pub was set on fire. Neighbours came to help, but her son and husband died and Raven had her leg amputated.
She was left indentured from the surgery on her leg, done by a close friend of Gus, and she grieved and healed in relative safety, working as a maid in the doctor's local surgery. Now 24 years old, she worked on a way to get back on her feet. She realised she could become the mercenary again, but with her prosthetic leg it would be difficult.
A couple came to the surgery one night, no one was there but her, werewolves, the woman pregnant and begging to save their child, she agreed to save the baby and used ancient Chinese medicine to stave off the mother's transformation long enough for the child to be born, but the ritual came at a terrible price, once the treatment stopped, the mother turned into a werewolf permanently, she killed the husband and Raven killed her, then she had her little pet, to train to keep them both alive.
She called the child @puppy (you sure you don't want to pick his name Jul?) the first six years were very difficult. She had immense trouble keeping the child fed, watched and sheltered but managed it. When he turned six she began to teach him what she knew, how to read people, why he should never trust anyone but her. As he grew older she began to take on more clients and would take him with her until she trusted him to complete each contract by himself.
Raven truly hated herself for giving the little boy such a life, but she couldn't afford such soft emotions, she'd saved him to keep them alive, she saved him and he had to keep her alive. She did her best to take care of him, but was cold towards him, she couldn't afford to get attached because she'd never survive the pain of losing another child.
