She made friends and was able to enjoy being a child for once in her life. During the summer before her third year at school, her mother went into labor with her third child. This one was certainly not planned and everyone worried how they would afford it. But after Katheryn was born, Verna passed away. The delivery had not been smooth and her body couldn't recover.
Their father wanted to toss the baby in the streets, angry that it had killed it's mother. But Elena wouldn't let him and reminded him that's not what Verna would have wanted.
