CHARACTER HISTORY: Julian was born on a cold December morning in 1853 as the firstborn son of Lucas and Amelia Blair. He lived a happy childhood with his parents, though they were poor and never had much. His father was a wizard and his mother was a muggle and they owned a bakery in London. His mother had two stillborn daughters before she gave birth to his brother, Matthew who lived. They got along moderately well, as brothers do. And they also got into mischief. Julian was a carefree boy, and it didn't help that he always had good looks on his side.
He was in Hufflepuff once he got to Hogwarts and started playing quidditch in his second year, though that was much younger than most others. He found he excelled in his studies, but he didn't like them as much as quidditch, and sometimes let his marks slip. At the end of his fifth year, he decided to leave school and become a professional quidditch player. He enjoyed the fame and the money helped his family stay afloat. He was very much a ladies' man and when he was still just sixteen, he had caught the eye of a fan by the name of Cathryn Mickelson. She was fifteen at the time, but they were both infatuated with each other. She was with child within two months of their courtship. Julian knew he didn't love her, but he would not leave her with his baby and without means, but he knew he could not continue his quidditch career or travel while he was a father. He decided to do the proper thing and marry Cathryn, then he went back to help his parents with the bakery.
They lived with his parents in the room above the bakery. There was little to no privacy, and Cathryn did not get on well with Julian's mother. It was stressful and hot, and their marriage was shaky at best. Still, he cared for his wife as best he could at the young age of seventeen. Then the baby came and it was a girl. They named her for her mother and grandmother, and Julian was enamored with her. Cathryn senior seemed to brighten with the arrival of her child, but when the newness wore off, so did her happiness.
Julian tried to fix things by taking care of his baby, whom he had begun to call Wren because her cooing sounded much like those of the birds outside. By the time baby Wren was a year and a half, he had saved enough of their portion of the bakery money to buy a small cottage overlooking a lake. He thought it would make his wife smile again, especially when they believed she was with child again, but it was not to be. His dear Cathryn, who he had come to care for dearly and almost love, had walked herself into the lake and drowned, killing herself and their unborn child. Julian was devastated and his poor baby girl took so long to stop asking for her mother. It was a dark time, and he blames himself for not figuring out why his wife was depressed.
Julian lost both of his parents within the next three years. His brother was off dragon hunting in Africa and Julian took over all responsibilities for the bakery. But it was never his passion, and he tried to think of a way to get back to flying. Two years before Wren was to start at Hogwarts, he had the idea to apply for a position there. He worried it would be a problem that he never graduated, but there wasn't much more about flying he could have learned by taking his NEWT level courses. He found that he loved teaching, and he was able to keep his sweet girl with him while he lived there. Now she is in her third year and he is learning the rigors of parenting a teenager, but he wouldn't have it any other way.
